Chapter 21
Izzy
Izzy took a deep breath and turned to the woman she didnât recognise sitting on the mat next to her. Sheâs just like you, she told herself. Izzy had left her house super early to make it here on time. She had taken Arthurâs advice on board and had vowed to make an effort with her and Evieâs social life. Yes, he was only moving to the other side of town but perhaps he was right that it would be good for Izzy to build a relationship with someone her own age, someone in the same boat as her â if that person existed. She needed to change her mindset and make more of an effort with the mums at the baby group, if not for her then for Evieâs sake, she needed baby friends to hang out with. She didnât want her daughterâs development to suffer as a result of her motherâs stubbornness.
âWould you like a drink? Iâm just going to grab one before we start,â Izzy asked the mum, who was trying to take off her baby boyâs jacket.
âOh, er, yes please.â She smiled gratefully. âItâs my first time here. We havenât been able to get our act together before now.â She brushed her fringe from her tired eyes and shook her head. âBabies, hey. Oh God, Iâve just realised I forgot to pack any baby wipes! Heâs managed to get it over himself and over me.â She pointed to the wet stain on her black leggings.
âHereâ â Izzy handed a pack from her own changing bag â âIâve learnt the hard way to have spares, and even spares of spares on me at all times. Iâm Izzy, by the way.â
âThank you! Iâm Lorna and this is Charlie,â Lorna said, wiping the mess from her thigh. âWhatâs your little girlâs name?â
âThis is Evie.â
âIâm loving her leggings, theyâre so cute!â Lorna scrunched her nose up at Evie.
âThanks, itâs our second outfit of the day too. Isnât it ridiculous the amount of washing someone so small can produce? Would you like tea or coffee? They have these special reusable mugs with lids so at least you can have a hot drink whilst youâre winding the bobbin up.â Izzy tried not to roll her eyes.
âCoffee please. Milk, no sugar and definitely not decaf,â Lorna said with a grateful smile.
âComing up. Are you OK to keep an eye on her?â
âSure. Hello, Evie, look this is Charlie!â Lorna began waving a hoop with multi-coloured ribbons over both of the babiesâ heads, instantly mesmerising them.
Izzy got to her feet, saying a quick hello to the other mums who were slowly filing in. As she poured out two mugs of coffee, she smiled to herself. She never thought she would be the one handing out baby wipes to other mums in their time of need. Arthur would be pleased.
âRight, ladies, good morning all!â Tina, the class organiser, chimed over the chatter. âJust a quick announcement that later on weâve got a special visit from
